Judges

God gave Israel many victories under the leadership of Joshua and much of the land of Cannaan was now theirs. But not all the land was conquered yet and Joshua was an old man. He had some final words for Israel. Read Joshua 23:9-11 (NIV) and fill in the blanks below.

"The  _ _ _ _   has  _ _ _ _ _ _   _ _ _  before
you great and  _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _   _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ;
to this day no one has been able to withstand you . . .
The LORD your God fights for you, just as he  _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ .
So be very _ _ _ _ _ _ _  to _ _ _ _  the
_ _ _ _  your God.

Now after Joshua died the Israelites were not always as faithful to God as they
should have been. During these times God allowed the surrounding nations to
persecute them.  Each time they repented and turned to God he helped them
by raising up leaders called Judges to fight for Israel and restore peace.
The Book of Judges tell us about 12 of these Judges.
